Is Your Dealership Advertising on ChatGPT Yet?
Conversational AI is changing the way consumers shop for vehicles. OpenAI Ads are now in beta, and at intice, we're already building automotive campaigns through intice360° Dig-Ad.
For more than twenty years, automotive digital marketing has revolved around one simple concept: be where shoppers are looking.
When Google became the dominant search engine, dealerships invested in search engine optimization and Google Ads. As Facebook and Instagram grew, dealers invested in social advertising. When consumers shifted to streaming television, Connected TV (CTV) and Over-the-Top (OTT) advertising became important additions to the marketing mix. Each new platform created another opportunity to reach shoppers where they were spending their time.
Today, another shift is underway. Consumers aren't just searching anymore. They're asking AI.
The New Starting Point for Vehicle Shopping
Think about how you use ChatGPT yourself. You don't type two or three keywords. You ask complete questions.
“What's the best midsize SUV for a family of four?”
“Should I lease or finance?”
“Is a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 the better long-term value?”
“What's a fair monthly payment on a new Honda Accord?”
Consumers are doing exactly the same thing. Instead of opening Google and searching for “Honda dealer near me,” many are beginning their shopping journey by having a conversation with an AI assistant. That conversation often happens long before they ever visit a dealership website. For automotive retailers, that's a significant change.
Introducing OpenAI Ads
OpenAI recently introduced Ads Manager in beta, allowing advertisers to participate in relevant AI conversations through sponsored content. Unlike traditional search advertising, where campaigns revolve around keywords, conversational advertising focuses on understanding the shopper's intent. Rather than simply matching a search phrase, the platform evaluates the overall context of the discussion to determine when an advertisement may provide useful, relevant information.
It's a different philosophy than traditional search advertising. Instead of asking, “What keyword should I bid on?” advertisers begin asking, “What conversations should my dealership be part of?” That distinction may seem subtle, but it fundamentally changes campaign strategy.
Our First Automotive Campaign
At intice, we've been participating in the OpenAI Ads beta to better understand how conversational advertising can benefit automotive retailers. Our first campaign was built for Bay Ridge Honda in Brooklyn, New York. Rather than creating a generic campaign, we approached it the same way we build successful Google Ads campaigns — through organization, relevance, and intent.
The campaign includes:
- Dedicated ad groups for every Honda model
- Approximately 50 individual advertisements tailored to different shopping scenarios
- Model-specific vehicle imagery
- Landing pages aligned to each vehicle
- Campaign tracking and attribution
- OpenAI Pixel integration for conversion measurement
- Conversational context configured around real shopper questions rather than traditional keywords
The campaign has now been completed and submitted to OpenAI and is currently awaiting final account activation before advertising begins serving. Being part of the beta has already provided valuable insight into how conversational advertising differs from every digital advertising platform we've worked with previously.
Advertising Is Becoming More Human
One of the most interesting aspects of OpenAI Ads isn't the advertisements themselves. It's the way they're targeted.
Google advertising has traditionally revolved around keywords. OpenAI introduces another layer by allowing advertisers to provide conversational context that helps AI determine when an advertisement is appropriate. For example, instead of targeting only “Honda Pilot lease,” advertisers can identify broader discussions involving:
- Three-row family SUVs
- Comparing Honda and Toyota
- Vehicle safety
- Lease versus finance decisions
- Local dealership recommendations
- New vehicle availability
The AI evaluates the conversation as a whole before determining whether an advertisement should be introduced. That represents a significant evolution from simple keyword matching.
What We've Learned So Far
Like every beta platform, there have been challenges. We've spent the last several weeks learning campaign architecture, account configuration, creative requirements, image validation, ad relationships, tracking implementation, reporting, and measurement. Some processes are still evolving. Documentation continues to improve. New capabilities are being added. That's exactly what makes participating in an early beta so valuable — every lesson we learn today helps us build better campaigns tomorrow.
Will OpenAI Replace Google Ads?
No. And we don't believe that's the right way to think about it.
Google remains one of the most effective advertising platforms available to dealerships and continues to be the cornerstone of every successful digital marketing strategy we build. Conversational AI isn't replacing search. It's becoming another place where customers research vehicles. Just as social media didn't eliminate search, and streaming television didn't replace broadcast TV, AI assistants represent another touchpoint within the customer journey. Dealerships don't need to abandon proven marketing channels. They need to understand where customer behavior is changing and be prepared to meet shoppers there.
Why We're Investing Early
At intice, our philosophy has always been simple. When new technology has the potential to improve dealership marketing, we don't wait until everyone else has figured it out. We learn it. We test it. We measure it. Then we determine whether it deserves a place in our clients' marketing strategy.
That's exactly what we're doing with OpenAI Ads. Through intice360° Dig-Ad, we're building the processes, campaign structures, creative strategies, measurement tools, and reporting methodologies that will allow dealerships to take advantage of conversational advertising as the platform continues to mature.
We're still in the early days. Performance data will ultimately determine how large a role this channel plays in the future. But one thing is already clear: consumers are increasingly asking AI before they ever visit a dealership website. The dealerships that understand how to participate in those conversations will be well positioned as this new channel continues to evolve.
The Future Is Already Here
Every major shift in digital marketing has followed a familiar pattern. Websites. Search engines. Social media. Mobile. Streaming television. Now, conversational AI.
The question isn't whether AI will influence the automotive shopping journey. It's already happening. The question is whether your dealership will be part of that conversation.
